Paths, Nodes, and Bezier Curves
Every vector shape is made of paths. A path is a series of connected points called nodes, with curves or straight lines running between them.
Creating a path with the Bezier tool (press B):
- Click to place your first node.
- Click again to place the next node - a straight line appears between them.
- Click and drag to create a curved segment between nodes.
- Double-click to end the path, or close it by clicking the first node again.
Editing nodes (press N for the Node editor):
- Click a node to select it. Drag it to move the curve.
- Drag the circular handles (called control handles) to change the shape of the curve.
- Use the toolbar at the top to make a node smooth (curves flow through it) or sharp (corners).
Practise by tracing a simple curved leaf shape. Most traditional design patterns start with paths just like this.
Tip: When a curve does not look right, select the node and check whether it is set to smooth or sharp in the top toolbar. Most flowing traditional patterns need smooth nodes.
