Recording Clear Audio

Audio quality can make or break a story. These habits will save you editing time later:

  • Find a quiet space. Closets, small rooms, and soft furniture absorb echo. Avoid large hard-walled rooms.
  • Keep the microphone close. About 10 to 15 cm from your mouth works well for most microphones.
  • Do a short test recording first. Listen back before recording your full take.
  • Pause before and after speaking. This gives you clean handles for editing.

Audacity is a free, open-source audio editor that runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. You can record directly in Audacity, or import audio you recorded on your phone. Download it at audacityteam.org.

Tip: Hold your phone or microphone about the width of your hand away from your mouth. Too close causes distortion; too far picks up the room.
