Exporting and Sharing Your Story

Different platforms call for different formats:

  • MP3 - audio-only stories, podcasts, oral history recordings
  • MP4 / H.264 - video, works on almost every platform
  • WAV - uncompressed audio for archiving; larger file size

Before you share:

  • Watch or listen to the whole piece from start to finish one more time.
  • Make sure everyone who appears or speaks has agreed to be shared publicly.
  • If your story touches on traditional knowledge, songs, or ceremonies, speak with an Elder or your community before releasing it online.

Note: The facilitated portion of this program includes conversations with Elders and knowledge keepers about protocols for sharing stories and recordings. That guidance comes from your community, not from this online module.

Tip: When in doubt about whether to share something, wait and ask. It is always easier to share later than to take something back once it is online.
